We’ve just held our latest graduation ceremony for those who finalised their apprenticeships from January to June 2018. It was a fantastic night and it was great to see the graduates and their families and friends attend the evening along with MTA Institute staff. It was an honour to be there to congratulate the graduates. The evening was also a reminder of the four years it took to complete their apprenticeship. How the world has changed in that time! The evolution of our industry is unstoppable and you just have to keep learning.
I recently represented the MTA Institute at a Ministerial roundtable for the employment and training of apprentices in Queensland. One aspect discussed by the Minister for Training and Skills Development was the $1million Advancing Apprentices Fund. This Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and industry to promote priority apprenticeship pathways and encourage more businesses to employ apprentices. I will be looking at using the Advancing Apprentices Fund to take the ‘Auto Camp’ to regional locations to increase awareness of automotive careers.
I also continue to be a representative on PwC’s Skills for Australia – Automotive Skills Service Organisation, via the Industry Reference Committee (IRC) – Strategic Reference Group. Currently the IRCs are establishing several Project Working Groups (PWGs) to help ensure training in the automotive sector is meeting industry needs. Participants of the PWGs will provide technical advice and subject matter expertise to the IRC to translate what they hear in consultations into training products. MTA Queensland will have representation in the following PWGs:
- Heavy Vehicles and Manufacturing
- Light Vehicles Mechanical Technology
- Motorcycle Mechanical Technology
- Vehicle Body Repair with specialties in:
- Automotive Glazing
- Automotive Re-finishing
- Automotive Vocational Preparation qualifications
Finally, as part of our quality assurance process, our administration team will be completing surveys with employers and students his month on our training delivery. This is to ensure you are receiving the service you expect and provides a chance for any feedback regarding our programs. We ant to ensure we are on top of our game, and this will help us make sure we are doing that. We look forward to your feedback.
