The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) last week welcomed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s announcement in reappointing Ministers Darren Chester and Paul Fletcher to their road safety portfolios.

“We are pleased to see Mr Chester and Mr Fletcher return to their Ministerial roles and we hope this provides stability and certainty to ANCAP, and more generally, road safety,” said Mr James Goodwin, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer.

The Hon. Darren Chester MP is reconfirmed as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Hon. Paul Fletcher MP takes on the revised portfolio of Minister for Urban Infrastructure.

“While it is disappointing the new ministry has not seen the appointment of a dedicated road safety minister, we will make sure vehicle safety is a top priority,” Mr Goodwin said.

The announcement was made following the release of statistics that reveal a 10 per cent spike in fatalities on Australian roads from 2014 to 2015.

“Stronger attention must be focused on road safety strategies at a coordinated, national level to reverse the current upward trend in road deaths.”

“We call on the new Government to immediately review the effectiveness of the current National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) and show national leadership in the area of road safety,” Mr Goodwin added.

ANCAP  is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, Australian state and territory governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
