On Thursday 1 November, the Federal Government announced that they would introduce, from 1 January 2019, a trial apprentice wage subsidy to support regional and rural businesses.
Eligibility is based on sign up date as well as commencement date (both being on or after 01/01/2019).
The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy aims to support apprenticeships in skills needs occupations in rural and regional areas.
The aim is to encourage employers in these areas who have not previously signed up apprentices (or trainees) and those employers who have been disengaged from the program over the last three years to take on an apprentice in a Cert 3 or 4 NSNL qualification.
SBAT’s and part-time apprenticeships are excluded. The Apprentice must be employed full-time.
As is usually the case, Eligibility Criteria will apply including:
The Australian Apprentice must be employed under the relevant Award (Modern Award) for their occupation. The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy is based on the award wage rate under which an Australian Apprentice is employed and provides support in the first three years of an Australian Apprenticeship as follows.
- 75% of the first year award wage
- 50% of the second year award wage; and
- 25% of the third year award wage.
