Accelerate Auto Electrics takes top spot at regional QLD training awards
Accelerate Auto Electrics & Air Conditioning, a member of MTA Queensland based on the Sunshine Coast and owned by Andrew Janes and Briohny de Vere, has taken the top spot in the Small Employer of the Year category for the North Coast Region at the Queensland Training Awards.
The awards celebrate top achievers in training in Queensland across 14 categories and recognise individuals and organisation that deliver best practice and innovation in vocational education and training (VET).
The Small Employer of the Year award is presented for outstanding achievement in the area of vocational education and training by a Queensland business with 19 or less full-time equivalent employees.
As a regional winner, Accelerate will now contest their category at the state level – competing against other regional winners for a coveted Queensland Training Award. State winners in aligned categories are given the opportunity to compete for national honours at the Australian Training Awards.
“Both Andrew and I are thrilled to take out the top spot for our region and category,” said Ms de Vere. “The Queensland finals are in September and we are really excited for the next round of interviews.
“We both recognise the vital role training has played in our success. Andrew is a dual-qualified auto electrician and mechanic and I have training in accounting and office administration. Without this training, we would not be able to run a business as successful as Accelerate.
“We both strongly believe that learning and education is a never-ending process and we encourage our staff to continuously look for avenues to upskill and expand their knowledge.
“We currently have two apprentices training with us and have signed off four apprentices since 2016. Our Office Manager is also undertaking a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping to further develop her administration skills.
“Our goal is to have one apprentice (or Certificate for Admin) sign off each year. We truly believe that by taking on and training apprentices we are providing a future not only them but for our business and the industry.”
Accelerate Auto Electrics & Air Conditioning was established more than 10 years ago when Andrew and Briohny left Brisbane for the Sunshine Coast. What started out as one man in a van has grown to be the leading auto electrical workshop in the region specialising in all areas of auto electrics including air conditioning servicing and repairs, wiring and starting faults, dual battery systems, caravan power systems and much more.
Since it was founded, the business has moved to a larger workshop with more than three times the workshop space as well as more office space for administration staff. The business now comprises 16 staff – 10 auto electricians, a first-year apprentice and five administration staff.
